“Game of Thrones” wins Outstanding Drama Series at The Emmys

Big congratulations for everyone involved in the series, especially to the wonderful Peter Dinklage! We all wanted Lena to attend the Emmys but hopefully new photos will come up soon πŸ™‚

After a seventh season that ventured well beyond The Wall β€” and the stories laid out in the George R. R. Martin novels β€” Game of Thrones won Outstanding Drama Series at the 70th Emmy Awards, beating out critical and fan favorites like The Americans, The Handmaid’s Tale, Stranger Things, This Is Us and Westworld. The win comes despite numerous complaints from fans and critics that the show lost some of its luster during the its recent season, with plot developments that made little sense and dialogue that didn’t feel as sharp without the Martin books as source material.

Those critiques apparently had little impact on The Academy of Television voters; aside from the Outstanding Drama win, the show earned quite a few other nominations, with showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss up for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, Lena Headey nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and Peter Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor; Dinklage took home the only other statue β€” his third Emmy win and seventh nomination for the series.

Nor is this the first Outstanding Drama Series win for Game of Thrones, which had already accrued nearly 130 Emmy nominations and dozens of wins overall. The popular series was previously nominated for Outstanding Drama for six consecutive years between 2011 and 2016, with wins in 2015 and 2016. While it had to sit out a round in 2017, this year it managed to not only get back in the race, but claim top honors at least one more time before its final season airs in 2019.
